Rejoice with Heirloom Seeds
Jere Gettle founder of The Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company planted his first garden at age 3. For fourteen years he has been printing and offering heirloom seeds through his Baker Creek Heirloom Seed catalog. They now offer 1,300 varieties of vegetables flowers and herbs, the largest source of varieties in the USA. You may also visit and peruse hundreds of choices at the Petaluma Baker Creek Seed Bank!
Saving seeds was once common among earlier generations, and now Jere is leading the way to educate and bring this tradition back to the forefront. He voices his concern and leads a campaign to raise awareness about the risks and implications of Genetically Modified foods. In the US, two companies now control close to ninety percent of the seed supply and most are genetically modified. This practice of inserting genes from unrelated species into plant seeds has unknown risks and implications associated with it, yet the practice continues by these companies which control our food supply.
Jere and Baker Seed Company are helping to organize the movement back to saving, sharing and preserving our food crops. Learn more at their website: www.rareseeds.com And join in their conversation on Facebook, Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company.
The National Heirloom Exposition will take place for the first time this September 13, 14 and 15th at the Sonoma Country Fairgrounds. Enjoy the world's pure food fair!
